CORPORATE BACKGROUND
Founded in 1979 with three employees, Strategic Simulations, Inc., (SSI),
published its first software product on the Apple II, Computer Bismarck.
Today, 17 years later, SSI has over 80 employees at its Sunnyvale, CA
headquarters. Through the years, SSI has published more than 200 games (over
470 versions in total) for diverse platforms from the Atari ST and Commodore
64/128 to the Amiga, IBM PC, 3DO, Macintosh, and Sony PlayStation.
WARGAMES.
Beginning with Computer Bismarck, SSI
has built an avid following among wargame enthusiasts.
Renowned for their historical accuracy, detail,
sophistication and artificial intelligence, SSI's best
military simulations include Kampfgruppe, Second Front,
Gettysburg: The Turning Point, Wargame Construction
Set, Panzer General, Steel Panthers, Allied General and
Fantasy General.
ADVANCED DUNGEONS & DRAGONS COMPUTER PRODUCTS.
Expanding on its success in wargames, SSI
entered the fantasy role-playing market in 1984 with such hit
titles as Wizard's Crown, Questron, and the Phantasie series.
In 1987, SSI entered into a strategic partnership with TSR,
Inc., publisher of the ADVANCED DUNGEONS &
DRAGONS game system, acknowledged worldwide as the
preeminent property in role-playing. This venture gave SSI the
license to produce and sublicense the official AD&D and
D&D product lines on all computers, video systems and arcade coin-ops.
To date, SSI has released 30 AD&D computer games resulting in a phenomenal
commercial success: over 800,000 units of Pool of Radiance series and
350,000 units of Eye of the Beholder series have sold worldwide.
WHOLLY OWNED SUBSIDIARY OF MINDSCAPE, INC. In October of
1994, Mindscape, Inc. (formerly known as The Software Toolworks, Inc.)
acquired SSI. Mindscape is a subsidiary of Pearson plc, a London-based
international media group.
INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION.
Through a network of distributors and translators
around the world, SSI products are now sold
in more than 34 countries in seven different
languages, generating over $24 million in
annual revenue.
